Rocky Point Academy staff

Rocky Point Academy's staff have been providing programs for those with learning disabilities since 1997.  In 1998 they began working with autism, trying to fit the pieces together for a complete autism program.  In 2008, that complete program came in the form of formal training from Ronald Davis and the Davis Autism Approach® program.

Larry Smith

Larry Smith is a corrected dyslexic and certified teacherLarry Smith established Rocky Point Academy in 1999.  The Davis methods corrected both his autism and dyslexia as an adult. Because of the dramatic results, he decided this correction was something he wanted to offer others.

Larry achieved his degree in education with undergraduate work in psychology.  He has had experience teaching Grades K-12, working as a job coach and as a physical therapist for mentally and physically challenged individuals.  He has volunteered as a coach for Special Olympics and children’s soccer league.

Larry was trained by Ron Davis, the founder of the Davis® methods for learning disabilities and autism. He left his job as a public school teacher to establish Rocky Point Academy Larry was the first Davis® facilitator in Alberta.

Larry says he enjoys being a Davis® facilitator because:

"This program for dyslexia is exciting because it acknowledges and utilizes our strengths instead of primarily focussing on the negatives.  The dyslexic mind is brilliant and when given the tools necessary for success, has no limits.”

"The autism program gives us a more complete understanding of autistics.  It gives us realistic hope. The autistic mind is brilliant, creative, intuitive and innovative and now we have a way which allows the autistic to show these talents to the world.  We can begin to truly participate fully in life!  This program has been liberating for me, and I am excited to offer this chance to others."

Larry was awarded the Alberta Literacy Award of Merit.  This award recognizes individuals for "exceptional dedication, significant accomplishments in literacy, and outstanding initiative and leadership in support of literacy in Alberta."  Larry gives many presentations to schools, communities and organizations in order to enhance awareness of the positive aspects of dyslexia, ADD and autism.

Stacey is a certified elementary school teacher and has had extensive experience in elementary school classrooms.  In addition to her education degree, she obtained minors in special education, psychology, child development and social sciences.   She spent 12 years tutoring those with learning disabilities in the areas of reading and math.  She has experience as a job coach, physical therapist and life skills teacher for mentally and physically challenged individuals.  Stacey volunteers her time at schools as a reading tutor and scribe, and previously as head coach for the Special Olympics swim team for three years.  She has offered various workshops for teachers in order to enhance awareness of the positive aspects of learning disabilities, ADD and autism.

Stacey was trained by Ron Davis, the founder of the Davis® methods for learning disabilities and autism.

Stacey says she enjoys being a Davis® facilitator because:

"I love the dyslexia program because after years of watching brilliant children struggle in the classroom and trying method after method to help them, I have finally found the solution to their needs.  This program gives them the ability to overcome the obstacles and allows their gifts to shine through.  I love watching a client come in on Monday with their head hanging, and leave on Friday with a bounce to their step and head held high."

"I love the autism program because I have been able to see first hand how wonderful it is for an autistic to become aware of the world around them.  I have empathy for parents who know that there is potential (those moments of absolute brilliance), but have no idea how to access it.  This program is the key to opening that potential.  These children and adults will make their mark in history- they are the ones that will make a difference.  I feel very privileged to be a part of it."
