Person First or Identity First Language
Neurodiversity emphasizes that each person's brain is unique, fostering an appreciation for differences. The concept of "neurodivergent" could technically apply to everyone, as no two individuals think alike. Every person has distinct strengths and challenges. However, currently, "neurodivergence" is used to describe those whose minds function differently from the norm, encompassing autism, ADHD, and learning disabilities like dyslexia.
We have consulted extensively with our clients and the neurodivergent community to understand their preferences due to ongoing discussions about terminology. Many within the neurodiverse community favour identity-first language (i.e. autistic person), viewing their cognitive differences as integral and meaningful to their identity. These individuals often see identity-first language as a more accurate reflection of and respect for neurodiversity. Conversely, some in the autism community, including many parents of children with autism, prefer person-first language (i.e. person with autism).
At Rocky Point Academy, we use both person-first and identity-first language to reflect our core values of being respectful, inclusive and supportive for every individual.
